LG’s got a leak and it’s revealing some intriguing details on another flagship smartphone — even backing them up with some screenshots. According to MoDaCo’s mole, it will brandish a 4.7 inch (720 x 1280) display, powered by LG’s first Tegra 3 quad-core setup. Processor speeds for the LG X3 are pegged at around 1.5GHz on a single core, dropping to 1.4GHz during multi-core use.

Hopefully, the 2,000mAh battery will withstand all that thinking power, while Ice Cream Sandwich should help push those multitasking chops to its limit. Camera-wise, you can expect an increasingly standard eight-megapxiel sensor, with a 1.3-megapixel camera on the front. There also appears to be some NFC hardware inside, identified by that circular logo at the top of these tantalizing screengrabs — something we saw on LG’s Prada phone 3.0. We’re hoping to get a full explanation (and a look at some hardware) at Mobile World Congress. There’s just a few weeks to go.

If you’re in the market for a speaker dock for your iOS device, you might be interested in taking a look at what Philips has recently unveiled in the form of the DS6100. Sporting a pretty sleek design, it seems that this particular speaker dock was designed with Apple’s design philosophy in mind and it even looks right at home when placed under your iMac.

It is made out of aluminum and sports a pair of neodymium speakers with 20W of total power which should do a pretty decent job, at least compared to the tiny built-in speakers on the iPhone/iPod. However thanks to its AUX-in port, the Philips DS6100 can be used with a variety of other gadgets, such as with the iMac and will allow for “easy connection to almost any electronic device”. If you like what you are seeing, you’ll be pleased to hear that Philips is expected to start shipping the DS6100 speaker dock come May 2012 and is expected to retail for $179.99.

Thought Canon was done with the point-and-shoot updates after refreshing its ELPH lineup last month? Think again, as the company is updating its PowerShot A-Series shooters with six new models in a variety of colors. All the cameras pack a 16-megapixel sensor, 28mm wide angle lens and can take 720p video. First up is the A4000 IS, which brings image stabilization, 8X optical zoom and a 3-inch LCD for $200 later this month. The A3400 IS and A2400 IS make their debuts in March, and bring the same image stabilization as the 4000, but have a lesser 5X optical zoom.

Additionally, the 3400 packs a 3-inch touchscreen LCD and costs $180, while the 2400 gets a smaller non-touchscreen 2.7-inch LCD and retails for $150. Meanwhile, the A2300 has the same specs as the 2400, minus the image stabilization, and will cost ten bucks less than its brother when it drops next month. Finally, the PowerShot A1300 and A810 each come with 5X optical zoom and a 2.7-inch LCD when they debut in April, with the A810 priced at $110 and the A1300 available for $120.

HTC’s “ladyphone” was found to sacrifice power and features for, erm, a flashing notification bauble that didn’t even fit on our reviewer’s purse. Its lackluster spec, patronizing marketing and plenty of bloatware meant we couldn’t recommend this phone — but if one wound up in your pocket / hand / handbag, how has life been with it?

We want to know how you feel about the unit, does that good camera compensate for its flaws, how does the charm indicator work on a daily basis and most importantly of all, if you were offering suggestions for a revised version, how would you change HTC’s Rhyme? The comments are this way, fill them with words and let’s talk this one over.

If you own a 3DS and you happen to be travelling to or from the UK this year, you’ll be glad to know that you won’t have to pay through the nose for WiFi access on your portable gaming console. Boingo Wireless and Nintendo have teamed up to provide free WiFi access to Nintendo 3DS owners in many of the main airports in the UK. This includes London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London Stansted, Southampton, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen.

This free WiFi promotion complements the free WiFi that 3DS users get in selected North American airports as well. To use the free WiFi, all you need to do is turn on the WiFi on your 3DS, and you’ll be automatically connected to it when you’re in a participating airport. Make full use of SpotPass as well as the Nintendo 3DS Internet Browser to pass the time while waiting for your flight.

Motorola has started to test their Droid Bionic update on Verizon Wireless, with the mobile carrier sending one out at the beginning of December last year in the form of system software 5.5.893. Apart from that, the past one month plus has seen the arrival of an update to hit 5.9.901, where it will hold a rather extensive list of new features and changes. There is additional work and development done on the smartphone’s next update, and whispers abound that a 5.9.902 update is already being prepared for distribution.

Testers who have successfully applied the 5.9.902 update would have come across additional modifications to their smartphones, albeit these are minor ones that would not be missed too much even if they were not there. Verizon’s VCast Music app has been removed with this particular update, but in return, Amazon’s MP3 store will plant itself firmly in the handset’s ecosystem. Notifications of this update should arrive shortly.

This may have been a fairly big CES for Windows Phone, but it looks like Microsoft still has a fair bit of convincing to do in order to bring all the carriers fully on board. That includes Sprint, which does currently have a Windows Phone in its lineup (and is apparently considering more in the “August-September time period”), but remains decidedly unenthusiastic about the platform as a whole.

As PCMag reports, Sprint’s David Owens said that the carrier is willing to train its reps on Windows Phone, but that Microsoft has to “build the enthusiasm for the product,” adding that the “number-one reason the product was returned was the user experience.” Sprint’s director of product development, Lois Fagan, further added that the carrier remains “cautiously optimistic,” but that Windows Phone “just hasn’t taken off.” In other news, Owens also confirmed that Sprint would expectedly now be focusing all of its intention on its new LTE network, and not produce any more WiMAX-based phones — although, as it’s noted previously Sprint will continue to support the network itself through 2015.

We know that everything that has a beginning, has an end, but don’t you feel that the Motorola DROID series (we mean the DROID DROID, not the RAZR, PRO, XYBOARD, BIONIC or any other of the DROID models) is starting to lose its appeal, and it looks like no one is doing anything to change this situation? This thought hit us shortly after the announcement of the new DROID 4 at CES 2012. Here’s what we mean…

There are three main reasons why we think the DROID line-up is in decline. These are: “more of the same”, “lack of hype” and “uninspiring design”.

More of the same

Ever since the original Motorola DROID came out, the company hasn’t made a single change in the main concept behind the phone. Yes, a DROID is a DROID, so it has to have some characteristic features, but then again, history has proved that people get tired when they are continuously presented with more of the same. If Motorola wishes the DROID phone to live on, it will have to bring some kind of change to the basic idea of the model. I’ll have to innovate it.

Lack of hype

Have you noticed that the last couple of DROIDs were announced suddenly, with almost zero presence in the news prior to that, no teasers, and overall – no buzz created around these models whatsoever. This is sad, considering the tremendous success their oldest predecessor had. Once launched, these newer models live a somewhat quiet life on the shelves, often overshadowed by some other premium phones. What Moto and Verizon need to do is to make the DROID hot again. Especially once they have brought some of the innovation that we mentioned above, they’ll have all the prerequisites to build some hype around the series again.

Uninspiring design

By “uninspiring design” here we mean that almost any appeal in terms of quality construction and materials has been stripped off the DROID 4. Firstly, even though the handset features elements of the DROID RAZR’s design language, this does not include the details that made the RAZR cool, namely the Kevlar back and diamond-cut accents. Secondly, the phone is entirely made of plastic, with no metal parts in its casing to give it a more premium feel. Unfortunately, it doesn’t stop here, as the DROID 4 has even lost the most characteristic appearance feature of its predecessors – the protruding screen area. For us, that change is more of a loss than a win.

We’re interested in hearing your opinion on the matter. Do you share our observations that the Motorola DROID line is no longer as exciting as it once was? C’mon, sound off in the comments below!

We fell in love with the 4.7-inch HTC Titan’s brilliant build quality, battery life and camera — less so for the bad pixel density, Mango’s flakiness and only having 12GB free memory once the OS had made its land grab. But if you found yourself back in 2010 when HTC was hashing out the schematics for this giant of a smartphone, what would you have demanded it do differently? (We’ll cover the Sensation XL in a couple of weeks for those of you who grabbed the Android version of this device.) There’s a river of comments below, come on in, the water’s fine!

They don’t call this the “giving time of the year” for nothing. A couple of years back we saw Google hook up the traveling masses with gratis WiFi, and today Skype is matching the big G’s kindness by giving you a holiday gift of its own. Starting on December 21st thru the 27th, you’ll be able to cling to an hour of costless internet access while you’re waiting on your flight — as long as you’re in one of the 50+ airports included in the deal (map shown after the break).

Aside from being outside of the lounging areas capable of accepting the courtesy, Android users are being left out of the equation, as the present can only be used by those who own a Mac, PC or iOS device. Now, the nice gesture would be even better if we knew that our fellow travelers wouldn’t be hogging all the bandwidth…
